One-of-a-Kind OTAKU ART, Fragments of Light from Japan.
Discover original, hand-drawn artwork born from Japan’s anime, manga, and independent creator culture.
Kakera means “a fragment” (かけら) in Japanese. An artist leaves a piece of themselves in every piece they make—and to us, each original is a fragment of that light: the vision and creative spark that is theirs alone.
Choose a completed original or commission a work created especially for you—then receive the physical artwork directly from Japan.

Collect an Original Artwork
That Exists Only Once.
Kakera Art brings together one-of-a-kind physical artworks created by independent Japanese artists.
Every original carries the artist’s hand, materials, choices, and individual expression. What arrives is the artwork itself—a tangible, hand-created original, not a digital file or a mass-produced print.

OTAKU ART Born from Japan’s Independent Creator Culture.
Kakera Art calls it “OTAKU ART”—original artwork shaped by the imagination and visual language of Japan’s anime, manga, games, and independent creator communities.
Contemporary in form, these works also resonate with a longer history of Japanese image-making—from ukiyo-e’s portrayals of popular culture to the lively observations of Hokusai Manga.
Each piece is created by the artist’s hand as a one-of-a-kind physical original. At Kakera Art, we see these works as expressions of contemporary culture—art to be experienced, collected, and preserved for the future.
From Japan’s Sukebu and Shikishi Culture

At Japanese doujin events, fans may bring a sketchbook to a favorite artist and ask them to draw something inside it. This personal exchange is known as Sukebu—short for “sketchbook.”
Artists also create one-of-a-kind illustrations on Shikishi, firm Japanese art boards used for writing, painting, signatures, and illustration. These works may be sold directly or offered through limited event lotteries.

Because each work is created by hand, artists can produce only a limited number. For collectors outside Japan, encountering—and acquiring—one of these originals has often required traveling to an event in Japan.
Kakera Art brings this experience beyond the event venue—connecting independent Japanese artists with collectors around the world.

FAQ
Each work identified as an original is a unique physical artwork created by the artist. It is not a mass-produced print.
A shikishi is a firm Japanese art board traditionally used for calligraphy, painting, signatures, and illustration. Contemporary artists also use shikishi to create compact, one-of-a-kind original works.
Skebu is short for “sketchbook.” At Japanese doujin events, a visitor may ask an artist to draw inside a sketchbook they have brought with them. Whether requests are accepted depends entirely on the artist and event rules.
Kakera Art does not accept commissions depicting characters or intellectual property owned by third parties. Available requests are limited to original subjects permitted by each artist.
No. Purchasing the physical artwork does not transfer its copyright. Copyright remains with the artist unless a separate written agreement states otherwise.
You own the physical original, and you may display it at home, keep it in your collection, and post photographs of it on your personal, non-commercial social media, crediting the artist where you reasonably can.
You may also pass the physical original on to someone else later — though no reproduction right travels with it.
Anything that reproduces or monetises the work. Specifically: making or distributing copies, selling prints or merchandise, using it in advertising, branding, or monetised content, minting it as a token or NFT, including it in a dataset or in AI training, and altering it materially and presenting the result as the artist's work.
Any of these needs separate written permission from the artist.
Full Brief and Partial Brief are paid in two stages.
- Deposit. Once the artist accepts your request, you pay a deposit that reserves a production slot with them. Paying it places you in that artist's production waiting list.
- Balance. When your turn arrives, we talk through your brief with the artist. Once you and the artist agree on it, you pay the balance together with shipping and insurance. The artist begins creating your artwork after this payment clears.
If you request framing, that option and any difference in shipping are invoiced separately after the artwork is finished.
Artist's Choice and Existing Originals are paid in full at once, because there is no briefing conversation to hold — for Artist's Choice you agree the subject up front and everything else is the artist's decision.
No. The deposit pays for a production slot the artist held for you and could not offer to anyone else. If we or the artist cannot complete the work for a reason that is not your doing, we refund everything you have paid.
If you become unreachable for 30 days before the balance is paid, we treat the request as abandoned and close it, and the deposit is not refunded. No artwork has been made at that point, because production does not begin until the balance clears.
Your artwork is already paid for, so we will not cancel it. The artist finishes it, using their own judgment for anything you have not confirmed, and we dispatch it to the address we hold for you.
Existing Originals and Artist's Choice works include no revisions — with Artist's Choice, every decision beyond the subject is the artist's to make.
Revision allowances for Full Brief and Partial Brief are stated on each artist's plan before purchase. Revisions apply at the rough-sketch stage, not after the artwork has been rendered.
There are three separate periods, and only the last two are predictable:
Stage Estimate Waiting for your turn Varies with the artist's production waiting list. Your individual estimate is sent with your order summary Creating the artwork About 3 months from the start of production Dispatch after completion Within 14 days, or after the framing option is paid International shipping time is additional and depends on the destination.
Yes, by default. The artist and Kakera Art may photograph and publish the finished work in portfolios, on websites, in exhibitions, and on social media. Your name and contact details are never published.
A private option is offered on the order form, and selecting it before payment keeps the artwork out of that publication. You can also ask for it by email at any point before the work is first published.
You need to be 18 or over to order. The order form asks you to confirm this; we do not collect your date of birth or age.
Eligible countries and the carrier are listed on our shipping and destinations page, and shipping is calculated before you pay. Some locations cannot be served because of carrier coverage, import restrictions, or sanctions — military addresses (APO/FPO/DPO) and P.O. boxes among them.
We expect to add destinations over time. If your country is not listed, contact us and we will tell you whether we can serve it.
No. Unless specifically stated, import duties, taxes, VAT/GST, and clearance fees are the buyer's responsibility and are not included in the price shown.
Keep all the packaging and tell us through our contact form as soon as possible and preferably within 7 days of delivery, giving your order number. We reply straight away — attach your photographs of the artwork, the packaging, and the shipping label to that reply.
That window is what lets us meet the carrier's insurance deadlines; it does not shorten any statutory right you have. We investigate and provide an appropriate remedy — though with a one-of-a-kind work, an identical replacement is not possible.
Commissions — Full Brief, Partial Brief, and Artist's Choice — are made for you, so change-of-mind cancellation is not accepted once the contract is formed. Statutory withdrawal rights for goods made to your specifications may not apply for the same reason. We do not ask you to waive any right that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Existing Originals may be returned within 14 days of delivery for a refund of the artwork price, provided the work comes back undamaged and in its original condition. Return shipping is at your cost, unless the return is our responsibility. Contact us first so we can confirm the return address and method.
